EU welcomes new pro-European government

Brussels, 17/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Approval of the new Moldovan government by the parliament in Chisinau on 14 January was “an important step for the country's democratic development”, say EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle in a joint statement published on that same day. They say they are “confident” new government - from the 28 November elections - “will continue to build on the substantial progress achieved in EU-Moldova relations”. Ashton and Füle hope, too, that the new government, led by pro-European Prime Minister Vlad Filat, will begin open and constructive dialogue with all the other political forces represented in the parliament so that the reform agenda can be pursued and a new president of the country elected. The EU also repeats its commitment to deepening its relations with the Republic of Moldova (one of the six countries of the Eastern Partnership, launched in May 2009) and to helping the country more closely align its legislation with that of the EU (European approximation agenda), Ashton and Füle say.
