Brussels, 14/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Human rights NGOs (Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network - EMHRN - International Federation of Human Rights Leagues - IFHR - World Organisation against Torture, Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies and Reporters without Borders) “express their extreme concern at the dramatic turn of events in Tunisia where currently the blind, violent repression of a nation-wide protest movement against social injustice, corruption, denial of fundamental liberties and the right to dignity is taking place”.
They “call on the EU expressly to condemn these violations” and urge it to “draw the consequences of the Tunisian government's abrogation of its international commitments, particularly on the freedoms of expression, association and assembly. The lack of swift and appropriate reaction on the part of the EU is all the more regrettable as it is currently engaged in negotiations to improve its relations with Tunisia by granting it 'enhanced status' within the framework of the neighbourhood policy”.
