60th anniversary of CEMR

Brussels, 14/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) is to celebrate its 60th anniversary in Geneva on 28 January 2011. The theme of celebrations will be: “The Europe we love, the Europe we want! CEMR has been building the Europe of regions for 60 years!”

Sandrine Salerno, Mayor of Geneva, Wolfgang Schuster, CEMR President and Mayor of Stuttgart, and Françoise Jeanneret, President of ASCCRE (Swiss association of CEMR) and Municipal Councillor of Neuchâtel, will open the talks divided into two round tables on the following: (1) from the European charter on municipal freedoms to multi-level governance; and (2) acting for Europe over the past 60 years … and more! The CEMR contribution since 1951 and prospects for the future.

Participants include Jean-Marie Palayret, Director of the EU's historic archives (university institute of Florence), Professor Nicolas Levrat (European institute of the university of Geneva), Keith Whitmore, President of the Congress of the Council of Europe, and Jan Olbrycht, MEP. The former president of the French Republic and honorary president of CEMR, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, is due to give an address during the celebration.
