14/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Fraud in Bulgaria. The European counter-fraud commissioner, Algirdas Šemeta, called on Bulgaria on Friday 14 January to improve its judicial system in order to bring counter-fraud investigations to a close, in particular with regard to European funds, AFP recounts. During a trip to that country, Šemeta criticised the fact that fraud investigations on European funds are blocked by the Bulgarian justice system. He deplored the fact that too few fraudsters are being prosecuted. In Bucharest, the day before, the commissioner had also deplored the fact that efforts for tackling fraud over the past 18 months had been at stagnation point. (S.P./transl.jl)
