11/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - “Mackerel war” enters new stage. The threat of Community reprisals against Iceland, which has granted itself a quota of 130,000 tonnes of mackerel for 2011 without consultation, is taking shape. The European Commission is proposing a ban on boats flying the Icelandic flag preventing them from offloading mackerel in EU fishing ports. The regulation on these retaliatory measures will be presented by the Commission on Friday 14 January within the European Economic Area (EEA) joint committee, in line with Article 5 of the EEA Protocol IX. It will enter into force immediately. It should be noted that Norway has applied such a ban since 23 July 2010. (L.C./transl.jl)
