Common sense will prevail, says Romani

Brussels, 11/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Though language issues see Spain and Italy in conflict with their European partners, “common sense will prevail” on the European patent. That is what Italian Economic Development Minister Paolo Romani said in Brussels on Tuesday 11 January after his meetings at the European Commission, in particular with Vice-Presidents Joaquín Almunia (Competition) and Antonio Tajani (Industry) and Commissioner Karel De Gucht (Trade). Following the failure of the latest attempts to find unanimity, the European Commission and several member states decided to go along the path of enhanced partnerships, to create a patent which, everyone agrees, will help European industry. Speaking to journalists after his meeting at the Commission, Romani is quoted by the ANSA agency as saying: “The EU position is quite rigid, with a wide majority of countries supporting the trilingual patent” in English, French and German. “But common sense will prevail: we will broach the subject once again in the forthcoming European Councils”. In Brussels, the Italian minister spoke about a number of other issues, including FIAT (“I'm sure that it wants to keep all its promises on investment”), car insurance, and assignment of digital television frequencies.
