Mounting pressure to conclude accession negotiations in June

Brussels, 11/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Ivo Josipovic, the Croatian president, has declared that should the Croat government fail to conclude EU accession negotiations by the end of the Hungarian Presidency on 13 June 2011, it should think about making way for a new team. In an obvious attempt to put pressure on Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor the president informed the Croatian newspaper, Poslovni Dnevnik: “If the negotiations are not concluded in June, the government should reconsider its position and responsibility. It will need to see why the goal it set itself has not been achieved, can the negotiations be completed within a reasonable period of time or they should be left to another team”. The next general elections are expected to take place in Croatia by the beginning of 2012, at the latest. Croatia will, at this stage, have provisionally closed 28 of the 35 chapters in its negotiations with the EU. A number of chapters are particularly difficult and still need to be negotiated, especially “competition policy” (where the restructuring of the shipbuilding sector is proving difficult) and “justice and fundamental rights”, where 22 “closing benchmarks” still need to be respected before talks can be closed. The Hungarian Presidency is determined to carry through these negotiations with the Croats before the end of its six monthly mandate. (H.B./tansl.fl)
