Brussels, 17/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has expressed its satisfaction at the United Nation's adoption of a resolution on an issue that is of the greatest importance for the EU's humanitarian wing: the health, safety and security of humanitarian workers. The resolution highlights the dangers faced by and the increase in attacks on humanitarian workers. The UN is seeking to protect aid workers in the most dangerous parts of the globe, said Ferran Tarradellas, spokesman for Kristalina Georgieva.
The resolution underlines the need of states to ensure the full and effective implementation of the principles and rules of international law, related to the safety and security of humanitarian and UN personnel - including international humanitarian law, human rights law and refugee law, the spokesman said, adding that this resolution had been shaped and supported by the EU in “a fine example of inter-institutional cooperation”.
