Juncker wants social as well as economic governance

Brussels, 17/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - Yes to European economic governance, but with simultaneous approximation of social policies, said the prime minister of Luxembourg, Jean-Claude Juncker, at the summit's final press conference. He said that fiscal convergence and harmonisation are necessarily what the politicians refer to when talking about reinforcing the European Union's economic policies. A single internal market and a single monetary zone should consider on a daily basis the areas that should be brought closer together, he added, noting that talk of fiscal harmonisation should also refer to social harmonisation (referring to Nicolas Sarkozy). Juncker said it was clear that both economic governance and economic policy were required, but it was also clear that one could not simply look at tax policies but should also examine social issues.
