Puissance Europe sends open letter to Eurogroup

Brussels, 17/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - With deliberation underway at the European Council, Puissance Europe/Weltmacht Europa has addressed an open letter to the heads of state and government of the Eurogroup member nations. In the document, made available to Agence Europe, the network of Euro-federalist initiatives maintains that it is incumbent upon Berlin and Paris to take, with those partners that so wish, the initiative of a declaration of intent by the Eurogroup or a vanguard within it, opening the road not to the umpteenth review of the Treaty of the Union but to European federation, the concrete foundations of which are in place. Puissance Europe points out that results of a recent survey show that the “United States of Europe” remains the aspiration of a large majority of European citizens, declaring that the supposed absence of popular support for political unity, the guarantee of solidarity, is pure fabrication. The document questions the current “imperial” situation of the Union, due to the weight of Germany, and recommends a federal solution. The letter supports eurobonds, seeing the preposition recently taken by Juncker and Tremonti as the tipping point to budgetary federation. As the president of Puissance Europe, Bernard Barthalay, puts it: “The Juncker-Tremonti proposal has the merit of pointing out that Berlin and Paris do not have exclusive responsibility for the euro's future - the issuance of state bonds in euro by the Eurogroup would be a founding act”.
