Brussels, 15/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the French Socialist and Conservative MEPs ended up in something of a free-for all over the rejection of the directive proposing a single procedure to apply for a residence and work permit for legal migrant workers within the EU (EUROPE 10277). The Socialists hoped to extend the directive to seasonal workers, seconded workers and refugees but, as they were unable to do this, they opted instead to vote against the text. “The European Left has dealt a bitter blow to the European immigration policy, particularly the fight against illegal immigration and working on the black market”, lamented Constance Le Grip and Philippe Juvin (EPP). “Yet again, the Socialists have proved their bad faith: by mixing together all subjects and agitating fears, they have blocked an important measure”, they added. For their part, the French Socialists welcomed having avoided “the return of the Bolkestein directive”. “This is excellent news”, commented Sylvie Guillaume, “because, quite apart from the risk of discrimination between immigrant and European workers, this text paved the way for competition between European workers as well”. She feels that new negotiations are needed in connection with the other texts of the “immigration package”. Catherine Trautmann, the head of the French Socialist delegation, called upon the European Commission to “start the procedure again from scratch”, in full respect of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights.
