Brussels, 02/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Union is calling for the results of the second round of the presidential elections held in Côte d'Ivoire on 28 November to be published. On Thursday 2 December, the Côte d'Ivoire still did not know which president had been elected, although the results between outgoing President Laurent Gbagbo and his rival, Alassane Ouattara, were due to be proclaimed on Wednesday, by midnight. On Wednesday evening, EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton had, on behalf of the European Union, called on the “independent electoral commission to publish the results of the election by this evening in accordance with the agreed schedule. This is essential to fully complete the process”. Laurent Gbagbo's request to cancel the ballot comes in addition to the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of the first election in ten years.
