THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/death penalty

01/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - “Inhuman” hanging of Iranian Khadijeh Jahed. The Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament has described the hanging on 1 December of Ms Khadijeh Jahed, who had been condemned to death for the murder of the wife of former footballer Nasser Mohammed Khani, as an “inhuman and cruel punishment”. The group says that it is truly sad that Iran has become the country with the highest number of executions per capita, and is critical of the fact that hundreds of Iranians are still on death row awaiting execution. The group calls on the Iranian authorities to bring an end to this situation and to cancel all scheduled executions. Some 146 people have been executed in Iran since the start of the year. In 2009, the total was 270. (B.C./transl.rt)
