Call for “constructive dialogue” after elections

Brussels, 01/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - The EU welcomed the smooth unfolding of legislative elections in Moldova on 28 November. The ballot won by the pro-European coalition in power “met most international standards for democratic elections”, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle in a statement on 30 November. Elections have taken the country forward on the road towards democracy and political stability, said Catherine Ashton, while Füle called on all political forces represented at the Moldovan parliament to “engage in open and constructive dialogue paving the way for the formation of a governing coalition as well as the election of the president of the Republic”. The EU is “committed to deepening its relations with the Republic of Moldova and supporting it in implementing an ambitious reform and EU approximation agenda”, Ashton and Füle state. The Liberal Democrat Party under Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the Liberal Party under Parliament Speaker Mihaï Ghimpu, and the Democrat Party won a majority of the parliamentary seats on Sunday, but this will not be sufficient for electing the head of state.
