Brussels, 26/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 24 November, the Commission closed a series of infringement proceedings in the field of equal treatment. The Commission was also pleased to welcome the following notifications by: (1) Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia of measures taken to implement EU rules prohibiting discrimination in employment and occupation on the grounds of sex. The Commission noted that these four countries had taken the measures required for implementing European legislation ensuring equal treatment for women and men in the workplace. (2) Latvia and Sweden of measures taken to ensure compliance with EU rules prohibiting discrimination in employment and occupation on the grounds of race and ethnic origin. The Commission noted that these two countries have done what was required to ensure that people receive equal treatment in the workplace irrespective of race or ethnic origin. (3) Greece and Italy of measures taken with a view to complying with EU rules on pensionable ages. In its rulings of 26 March and 13 November 2008, the EU Court of Justice found that different pensionable ages in Greece and Italy for male and female civil servants violated the principle of equal treatment. The Commission noted that these two countries had now done away with gender differences. (G.B./transl.jl)
