Brussels, 24/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 24 November, the president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, awarded the LUX Cinema Prize to Feo Aladag, the director of the “Die Fremde” film, which raises the issue of “honour killings”, by depicting the tragedy of a Turkish family living in Germany. The jury chose this film from among three in the running (the others being “Akadimia Platonos” and “Illégal”) for European feature films best illustrating the founding values of European identity and cultural diversity. Jerzy Buzek declared that “the three films deal in a very sensitive way with the issue of identity, and the differences between a collective identity and an individual one. This is an important topic because in an ever more integrated Europe we will have to answer the question what it actually means to be European, and what our many identities - local, regional, national and European - mean in a united continent”. Aladag explained that her film aimed to go beyond intolerance in a multicultural society, which must find new ways of resolving difference. The director was delighted to receive the Lux Prize, which she described as “an essential bridge between national identities and beyond”. “Die Fremde” will benefit from €90,000 in funding for subtitling in 23 EU official languages, adaptation for the blind and hard of hearing and the production of a copy of the film for each member state.
