ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) energy

Emerging countries send shockwaves through sector. Since the beginning of 2010, more than 50 stock market flotations have taken place in the energy sectors and the capital raised in this context has increased tenfold over a year. This situation illustrates the shockwaves currently affecting the sector. For the most part, new market entries are coming from emerging countries such as India, Brazil and China. These newcomers have effectively upset the whole energy industry landscape, for so long dominated by the Anglo-Saxon countries. This upset began with Petrochina, which entered the scene a few years ago and for a period underwent the biggest capitalisation operation in the world, ahead of ExxonMobil. Similarly, in the coal industry, it is Chinese and Indian business leaders that are leading the way, in front of their US rival, Peabody. This development reflects the current economic shakeup under way and the fact that it is the emerging countries stimulating growth in the global energy markets, as well as centralising resources in oil and gas.
