Brussels, 16/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - A study day has been devoted in Rome to an initiative by the French association, “Choisir - La Cause des Femmes”, which hopes to introduce a “most favoured European citizen clause” into the national legislation of all EU member states. Each country would undertake to apply the most advanced legislation existing in the European Union to its own citizens in such areas as maternity, professional and family life, the fight against violence and political activity. The study day in Rome unfolded with a seminar at Sapienza University and a round table discussion at the Casa Internazionale delle Donne. The idea of the “most favoured European citizen clause” has been gaining ground since 2006 thanks to the commitment shown by Gisèle Halimi, who chairs “Choisir - La Cause des Femmes”, a movement that she founded in 1971 with Simone de Beauvoir and other French female personalities. Choisir officials examined the bodies of law of the 27 member states in relation to women's rights and selected the 14 laws considered most favourable for women. (Gp/transl.jl)
