Van Rompuy wants more consumer demand and an open market

Brussels, 16/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - China must encourage domestic demand and open up its markets to European products and investment, said Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council. “The Chinese economy has to shift from export-led growth to a more domestic-level growth”, he said on Tuesday addressing the European Policy Centre (EPC) in Brussels. The current situation with just one third of Chinese GDP generated by domestic consumption is “unsustainable” and Beijing “has to correct it”, Van Rompuy said. He also urged Chinese authorities to create “better market access and a more level playing field for all companies, Chinese and non-Chinese” and to take measures to balance the country's balance of payments. The EU, for its part, is making a great effort in this area, he said. “We are very open. We are asking (Ed: Beijing) for the same openness”, he added. (H.B./transl.jl)
