Van Rompuy calls for results, not “communication”

Brussels, 16/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - The EU need “concrete results” in combating the economic crisis, unemployment and crime and not “communication” strategies or “visibility” to regain citizens' trust, said the president of the European Council. Given the current “crisis of legitimacy in political democracy” throughout Europe (which is mainly to be seen in the increased pandering to the people), the EU and member states must act to regain “legitimacy” in the public's eyes. “It will not be with a better communication on the functioning of the European institutions or higher visibility of the president of the European Council or the high representative for foreign affairs that will solve the problem”, Van Rompuy said on 16 November addressing the European Policy Centre (EPC). “We need much more than that. We can only convince people by results, and if we can combat the economic crisis, unemployment and crime effectively, or if we can integrate immigrants into our societies. The people need to see the outcome of all these policies. Then there will be much more confidence in policy”, he said. (H.B./transl.jl)
