Campania waste crisis concerns Greens

Brussels, 22/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - A call to Italian authorities to bring an immediate halt to the “environmental crime” in the Regione Campania in the south of Italy has just been launched by Danish Green MEP Margrete Auken. In a press release Auken says that the European Parliament (EP) had expressed “serious concerns” over this latest waste crisis. The MEP, who was part of a delegation from the EP petitions committee to Campania last spring, believes the difficulties are the result of the poor waste management policies of the various administrations concerned and the failure to abide by EU standards.

Green MEPs are particularly concerned over the highly controversial re-opening of the Cava di Vitiello landfill site, which is in the Vesuvio National Park, after the authorities pledged no longer to use it. In her press release, Auken calls on the European Commission “to immediately take action to prevent the landfill from going ahead, including taking further action before the European Court of Justice”.
