Brussels, 07/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - The Governing Council of the European Central Bank decided today to keep the main re-financing interest rate in the eurozone unchanged, along with the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility. They will remain at 1.00 %, 1.75 % and 0.25 % respectively. After the meeting, Jean-Claude Trichet said the main euro rates were appropriate and therefore the ECB had decided not to change them. The President of the ECB said that inflation had risen from 1.6% to 1.8% from August to September due to energy price rises. He said inflation would remain 'moderate' in the medium-term and close to but slightly below the 2% target. After a slight wobble, growth would remain 'positive' but 'moderate' in the eurozone in the second half of the year. Asked about the continuation of special funding measures provided by the ECB for the banks, he said that there had been a fall in the amounts requested and called on lending agencies to take action to adjust their balance sheets and capitalisation, urging the market to continue to use where necessary the special financial support measures introduced by the Member States to respond to the crisis. Trichet called on the Member States to set 'ambitious' budget consolidation targets for their 2011 budgets and told them to use any available extra income to this end. (M.B. trans fl)
