Brussels, 13/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 13 July, the EU's Special Envoy to Afghanistan announced that the EU had decided to temporarily suspend its aid programme to Afghanistan (worth €600 million) while waiting for the results from the international donors' conference on 20 July in Kabul. Vygaudas Usackas, the EU's special representative to Afghanistan, informed AFP that “the European Union had intentionally postponed its three-year aid programme to September, so that they could see what the Afghan priorities were and see how this a programme could be integrated into these priorities”. He added that if the results proved positive, the EU might even decide to increase the aid plan of €200 million over the next three years. During the 20 July conference, Afghanistan's international partners will be interested in hearing the Afghan government explain what progress it has made over recent years in the country and what its future development plans will be.
