Brussels, 13/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 13 July, the European Commission reiterated its commitment in support of Turkey's accession to the EU and announced that it would assess how accession negotiations could be speeded up. At the end of the EU-Turkey political dialogue ministerial meeting on Tuesday 13 July in Istanbul, Stefan Füle, the commissioner in charge of enlargement, explained: “There should be zero doubt about our commitment…We have a very clear mandate from member states”. The accession negotiations begun in October 2005 are only going forward very slowly (13 chapters opened, one closed). According to Reuters, the commissioner said that “no one is happy at the current speed” and added that “we will be looking at ways we can speed up the accession process”. He also expressed his support for constitutional reform measures prepared by the government upon which Turkish citizens will vote in a referendum on 12 September. (H.B./transl.fl)
