Brussels, 17/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - The EU has paid €5.7 million to the Syrian Finance Ministry to cover expenses incurred in assisting the children of Iraqi refugees in the country, largely through the provision of teachers, the EU Delegation in Damascus has announced. This money comes from a total of €10 million ring-fenced by the European Commission for the aid programme providing “Emergency support to the Syrian Education Sector affected by a large influx of Iraqi refugees in Syria”.
EU Ambassador to Syria Vassilis Bontosoglou said that, since 2007, the EU had spent over €60 million to help Iraqi refugees and the Syrian people who had received them. (F.B./transl.rt)
