Brussels, 17/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - On the morning of Thursday 17 June, UK Prime Minister David Cameron held a meeting with European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. Speaking to the press afterwards, he highlighted the importance for his government of a European agenda based on deregulation, the completion of the internal market, respect for the principle of subsidiarity and the increased competitiveness of the European economy. “We should concentrate on substance, not on institutions,” he said, too. The United Kingdom will be a “good promoter of free trade” and also of taking forward Doha Round negotiations at the WTO, and will argue for “structural reforms and the accomplishment of the single market, rather than processes and institutions”, Cameron said. While the UK has no intention of joining the euro, “a strong, successful eurozone is vital for Britain's national interests”. The UK has a “positive” European agenda, but will not hesitate to “defend its national interests and its red lines,” he added. He called, too, for a “package of strong sanctions” against Iran.
