EP suspends vote on PNR

Brussels, 05/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 5 May, the European Parliament confirmed its intention to suspend the vote on agreements between the EU and the United States and Australia on air passenger information for the purposes of tackling terrorism. These agreements which refer to “Passenger Name Records” (PNR) had been put to the EP for approval, but Parliament proposes postponing its vote in exchange for renegotiation of the agreements on new bases, say MEPs in the resolution adopted o Wednesday. MEPs want to be able to be able to examine beforehand the possible arrangements for the use of PNR which comply with European law and meet Parliament's concerns raised in its previous resolutions (data protection, proportionality and possibility of appeal). MEPs call on the Commission to present, no later than mid-July 2010, a proposal for a single model PNR and a draft mandate for negotiations with third countries. This model should ensue that the data are used in line with European data protection standards, without profiling or being transferred to third countries. PNR data alone must not be grounds for preventing an individual boarding a flight, MEPs say. (B.C./transl.rt)
