Parliament calls for rapid implementation of digital agenda

Brussels, 05/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - In plenary session on Tuesday 5 May, the European Parliament adopted, by a large majority (by a show of hands), the resolution by Pilar del Castillo Vera (EPP, Spain) on Europe's digital future (“Report on a new Digital Agenda for Europe: 2015.eu”). According to the resolution, every European citizen should have access to broadband internet at competitive prices by 2013 and be trained in the skills needed to be able to participate fully in the new digital society. The EP calls for specific, measurable targets and a regular review of the 2015.eu strategy's achievements. It believes that 50% of households should be connected to very high speed networks by 2015 and 100% by 2020. All primary and secondary schools should have reliable, quality internet connections by 2013 and very high speed internet connections by 2015. There should also be a target of 75% of mobile subscribers being 3G users by 2015. The text states, too, consumers should be able to access online public services and content free of charge throughout the EU. It says that consumers must be aware of their rights in the digital environment, rights which should be protected by a clear legal framework, with particular attention paid to protecting minors and young adults. The European Commission welcomed the Parliament's position on Europe's digital future and said that it would take the suggestions contained in the resolution into account for the next communication which it is preparing on this issue. The statement adopted by ministers at their informal meeting in Granada on 20 April will also be of use to the Commission (see EUROPE 10122). (I.L./trans.rt)
