Pascal Lamy urges negotiations breakthrough

Brussels, 05/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - Addressing the WTO General Council on Tuesday 4 May, Pascal Lamy recommended that members “start shaking the ingredients before the ice melts”. In an effort to push forward these negotiations, he mentioned a number of necessary ingredients: meetings organised by the chairs of the different negotiating groups; preliminary contacts between trade ministers from the 153 member countries of the WTO and his own services. In his recent contacts with Latin America and during meetings with the World Bank and IMF, the WTO director-general said that governments were committed to concluding the Doha Round and had even greater determination to achieve this objective. Negotiations on agriculture and access for industrial products (NAMA) will resume in the week of 17 May. (E.H./transl.fl)
