THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/united kingdom

01/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - In the event of a Conservative (“Tory”) victory in the general election in the United Kingdom, widely predicted for 6 May, the new UK Prime Minister David Cameron intends to play a “constructive role” in the European Union, particularly on issues such as climate change, completion of the internal market and increasing the competitiveness of the European economy. “I think they (Ed.: the other EU leaders) will be pleasantly surprised. They will find us straightforward and honest. We'll be friendly neighbours, not reluctant tenants,” Cameron says in an interview with the Financial Times on 1 April. It is not an April Fool: the interview can be read at http://www.ft.com/ukelection (H.B./transl.rt)
