17/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 16 February, the Ecofin Council gave Lithuania permission to continue, until the end of 2012, to appoint as liable for payment of value-added tax (VAT) the tax-payer taking delivery of wood, goods or services provided by another tax-payer, in the event that the latter is subject to insolvency or restructuring proceedings. These provisions, which constitute derogations to the general European system of VAT (directive 2006/112/EC), aim to simplify the duties of the authorities in tax collection matters and in the fight against tax fraud.
