17/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - After a considerable number of meetings in recent days to discuss the situation in Greece, the College of Commissioners held a debate on Wednesday 17 February, which led to three principal conclusions. Summarising the conclusions of President Barroso, a Commission spokesperson stated that: (1) the rules and instruments of the EU are "appropriate". The Stability and Growth Pact (SGP), the macro-economic supervision rules and the excessive deficit procedures are not to blame, it was "failure to observe them" which is "central to the debate"; (2) the Commission is to set in place a "regular follow-up" of the Greek measures and their budgetary impact, in order to ensure that the objective of the Greek government to bring its deficit down by 4% of GDP in 2010 is met; (3) "the Euro zone will take determined and coordinated action, if necessary, to safeguard the stability of the euro zone. If a situation of this kind should emerge, we have the necessary resources and instruments to do so". In this event, the Commission would be prepared to set in place a European framework to coordinate intervention. (A.B./trans.fl)
