Brussels, 02/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - The Latvian government announced on Tuesday 2 February that it would take in a detainee from the US prison camp at Guantanamo. The foreign minister said that the prisoner, from Central Asia, could arrive in Latvia within the next six months. On Tuesday, Switzerland moved a step closer to accepting two Uighurs from Guantanamo. The government of the Canton of Jura confirmed its offer to take in two people. It communicated its position to the Swiss Federal Council which will give its decision on this issue made all the more sensitive since Beijing wants to repatriate to China any detainees of Chinese nationality who are considered to be terrorists. The Bulgarian government will decide in February whether to take in a detainee. Since last spring, some dozen European countries have agreed to take in former prisoners (see EUROPE 10066). Of the 192 people still being detained in the US naval base in Cuba, around 100 could be transferred abroad, some 40 will be tried in the United States and fewer than 50 could remain in prison indefinitely without trial.
