Human rights associations criticise Commission

Brussels, 27/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - Human rights associations, especially the Tunisian Committee for the Respect of Human Rights (CRDHT), which belongs to the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), is critical of the passiveness shown by the EU, member states and Commission during the trial against the journalist and opposition activist, Taoufik Ben Brik, who has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment. Despite the indignant reaction of most European media and European human rights associations, as well as a number of reputed political figures, the EU member states represented in Tunisia and the European Commission delegation in Tunisia did not send any observers to the trial. This “reserve” is in sharp contrast to the virulent official campaign in Tunisia against France, Belgium and Sweden, a campaign that Hélène Flautre (Green MEP, France, see EUROPE 10027), who attended Taoufik Ben Brik's trial in Tunisia as an observer, has vigorously denounced.
