Call for justice system to be reworked to cater for young people

Brussels, 23/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - The EU and the Palestinian Authority (the Palestinian social affairs ministry) signed an agreement known as a Technical Assessment Report on Juvenile Justice on Thursday 19 November.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the European Union by the European Commission and EUPOL COPPS, which say the idea behind it is to help set up a justice system for the future Palestinian state and re-organise the detention of young people so they are not kept in adult prisons. “Fifty percent of the Palestinian population is below 18 years old. They are the future of Palestine and a vulnerable group whose problems should, at all stages, be dealt with by experts in dealing with their problems”, observed Christophe Lukits, head of a delegation of EU lawyers sent to Ramallah by EUPOL COPPS.
