Brussels, 30/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 30 October, the European Council welcomed the initiatives taken by the European Commission to stabilise the European milk and milk product market. In this context, it “took note” of the Commission's proposal to overcome the most urgent liquidity problems met by farmers, via the release of aid of EUR 280 million from the EU. The Council of Ministers of the EUY called on the European Council to “continue to respond to the challenges facing the milk sector”. It pointed out that the European Commission had set up a high level groups with the important job of discussing medium and longer term prospects for this sector.
Commission will press on with its work, says French president Nicolas Sarkozy
Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president declared in a press conference that, “European milk producers have experienced a crisis that is unprecedented for decades”. The European Council tackled this question and Mr Sarkozy promised that Heads of State and governments would not, “leave producers without a future”. According to the French president, “the Commission will press on with its reflection and come up with proposals on agricultural regulation sooner than planned” (L.C.)
