30/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 30 October, the European Commission President José Manuel Barroso congratulated the people of Mozambique for “their commitment to democracy by having successfully participated in these fourth consecutive multi-party elections since the Peace Agreement in the early 1990s”. Holding these elections (legislative, presidential and provincial) contributes to the stability of the region, Barroso said in a press release. The Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), which has been in power since 1975, and outgoing President Armando Guebuza have won the elections, taking over 75% of the vote, according to interim results based on 17% of votes. Barroso spoke of the elections taking place in a “serene and peaceful atmosphere”. The European Commission sent an electoral observation team comprising 131 members from 24 EU countries.
