Strasbourg, 23/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption, on Thursday 22 October in Strasbourg, of a common resolution presented by the EPP, S&D, ALDE, Greens/EFA, ECR, GUE/NGL and EFD Groups, the European Parliament expresses serious doubt about the certitude of election results that led to a second mandate for President Ahmedinejad despite obvious signs of massive electoral fraud. It welcomes the courage of all Iranians who defend their fundamental freedoms and democratic principles, especially praising the courage of Iranian women, who played a crucial role in post-electoral demonstrations in June. The Parliament calls on the Iranian authorities to allow the International Red Cross Committee to see all prisoners without exception and to authorise international human rights organisations to supervise the situation in the country. It urges the Iranian authorities to eliminate any kind of torture or other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishments, and to respect judiciary procedures while putting an end to the impunity of those guilty of violating human rights. It condemns the suicide bomb attack in the province of Sistan-Baluchistan on 17 October 2009, which left dozens dead and many injured. The Parliament reiterates its call on Iranian authorities to comply with government obligations to respect religious minorities and to rapidly release the leaders of the Bahaï community. It renews its appeal to Iranian authorities to abolish the death penalty and to immediately establish a moratorium on executions. The Parliament calls on the Commission to set in place a Union delegation in Teheran in order to promote and strengthen dialogue with the Iranian authorities and civil society and to enhance cooperation, especially for aid to refugees and the fight against drug trafficking.
