Luxembourg, 20/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - The debate on the external representation of the euro area within international financial institutions may not be progressing as quickly as Jean-Claude Juncker would wish (exchanges again failed to bear fruit and “I don't want to pursue a debate that is going nowhere,” he said again on Monday 19 October), but progress in terms of the visibility of the Eurogroup is possible in the G20. “We would like the Eurogroup, in the G20 and when there is multilateral supervision, to be considered as a whole and not country by country,” Juncker said after the meeting of euro area finance ministers which he chaired. Just like the EU as a whole, the euro area should make a contribution on its own behalf to the discussions of G20 finance ministers, who will, in St Andrews (6-7 November), give thought to the setting up of the mutual assessment process announced in Pittsburgh. Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said that the euro area would contribute to “the framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth” that the G20 wanted on all issues that deal with common policies.
