20/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 19 October, the 16 member states of the euro area repeated their support for a strong dollar. President of the European Central Bank Jean-Claude Trichet said that “excessive volatility and disordered evolution in exchange markets were bad for financial and economic stability”. Calling for “a stable, solid monetary system”, he stressed his confidence in the comments of the US authorities. “We all note with great interest and attention, the statements by the US authorities on their 'strong dollar' policy”. But the dollar is not the only currency depreciation of which against the euro is causing concern. With the yuan undervalued, a delegation made up of Trichet, Jean-Claude Juncker and Joaquin Almunia will travel to China “before the end of the year” for discussions on exchange rate policy, the Eurogroup president told press.
