Mario Monti is entrusted with making proposals for re-launch of Single Market under “Barroso II” Commission

Brussels, 20/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - Commission President José Manuel Barroso has entrusted the former Italian commissioner, Mario Monti (today president of the University of Bocconi), with the task of drafting a report containing options and recommendations for “an initiative to re-launch the single market as a key strategic objective of the new Commission”. “As the European Union approaches the 20th anniversary of the symbolic date of 1992, President Barroso believes, as announced in his Political Guidelines, that the single market requires political determination so that it can withstand the threat of economic nationalism and fulfil all its potential”, the Commission release of 20 October reads. Mr Monti will conduct this mission under his personal responsibility but will be able to rely on the Commission's expertise and support. He may hold consultations with the EP, the relevant commissioners, competent authorities of member states and other stakeholders. (H.B./transl.jl)
