GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/terrorism

23/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Monday the Council approved the review of the European communication strategy for the media on terrorism. This review includes an update of a series of key messages to be sent to the different media through the press services network and the European institutions' spokespersons. According to the Council, these messages come from the Union's anti-terrorist policy, which has to be “fair” and “clear”, highlights the importance of integration and non-discrimination within the EU and which points out the objectives of a democratic nature that the Union has set itself as part of its external policy. This review also included an update in the common lexicon of words used by public figures that can give rise to misinterpretations. As well as the term “jihad”, “Islamic” and “fundamentalists”, other definitions have been added, such as the term, “wahhabism”. Details of this lexicon remain confidential. (bc)
