Brussels, 23/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - The federal minister of the interior Wolgang Schäuble affirmed on 20 April that he was hoping on developing a “new approach” on the framework decision on data protection in the third pillar and is attempting to obtain an agreement, particularly with the aim of pushing forward the draft regulation on the Visa Information System (VIS). Schäuble indicated that, “We hope that parliament will stop ending the correlation between these dossiers and that we can have an agreement (on VIS) under our presidency”. Schäuble said that he wanted to convince MEPs. Commissioner Franco Frattini said that they absolutely needed an agreement for VIS to be operation in 2009. The EP is expected to give an opinion on this text in November, he said. At the heart of the current discussions is the question of access of police authorities to information gathered for managing the entry and leave to remain for asylum seekers. (bc)
