Solana-Larijani meeting in Ankara on Wednesday

Luxemburg, 23/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana has announced that he will meet Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani in Ankara on Wednesday afternoon. On Monday, Mr Solana brought EU Foreign Ministers up to date on his recent telephone conversations with Mr Larijani, with whom he will, on Wednesday, try to agree the necessary conditions for negotiation. “I hope to begin the resumption of discussions, which we gave up some time ago, to see if we can make progress towards negotiations,” Mr Solana said on his arrival in Luxemburg for the General Affairs and External Relations Council. The United States, Russia, China, France, Germany and the United Kingdom have offered Tehran greater cooperation in the civil nuclear area, but this offer is dependent on the Iranians ceasing uranium enrichment. In the hope of bringing Iran back to the negotiating table, the EU has, at the same time, implemented the sanctions set out in the UN Security Council resolution. Earlier on Monday, the Council adopted its own list, longer than the one drawn up by the UN, of persons and groups, whose assets and economic resources will be frozen. (ab)
