03/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Commission will present “in the following weeks or months” a report on the implementation and functioning of Regulation 261/2004 on air passenger rights in the EU (compensation and assistance in the event of refused embarkation, cancellations or significant flight delays). At this stage, however, it is too early to say whether it will be proposing amendments in this report to this legislation, in an effort to make it more effective and beneficial to passengers. This declaration was made by a Commission spokesperson on Wednesday in response to an article in the Financial Times on 3 January which said that Commissioner Barrot was disappointed by the lack of respect paid to the regulation by airlines and that he intended to beef up the text. Regulation 261/200 (published in Official Journal L 046 in 2004) entered into force on 17 February 2005. (hb)
