THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/congo

31/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - MEPs responsible for supervising the presidential elections in Congo noted “major improvements” in the way that the presidential election unfolded last weekend. Earlier, technical problems had been detected for a number of voters on the electoral roll, but, on 29 October, “it all went much better”, said Jürgen Schröder (EPP-ED, Germany), who headed the European Parliament delegation in Kinshasa. The other members of the EP delegation are: Filip Kaczmarek (EPP-ED, Poland), Richard Howitt (PES, UK), Robert Evans (PES, UK), Ulrich Stockmann (PES, Germany), Javier Pomes Ruiz (PES, Spain), Fiona Hall (ALDE, UK), Marie-Hélène Aubert (Greens/EFA, France) and Koen Dillen (NA, Belgium). The EP delegation is part of the overall EU Election Observation Mission conducted by another MEP, Philippe Morillon (ALDE, France), which has 250 EU observers on the ground. (hb)
