THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/enlargement/bulgaria

31/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Bulgarian parliament approved its third series of amendments to the Constitution on Thursday (relating to legal reform), with 184 votes to 35, i.e. by only 4 votes above the required minimum majority of three quarters, it is stated in the Sofia Morning News. The daily specifies that most of the MPs from nationalistic fraction Ataka (Attack) were hostile to the amendments and were missing from the vote which took place in the presence of Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, Vice President Anguel Marin, and many diplomats. (See EUROPE 9164 on remarks made on Bulgaria by Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, who pointed out that he would present his preliminary assessment of the situation during the evening of 3 April in Strasbourg before the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, pending his final report due 16 May).
