Brussels, 31/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Quartet for the Middle East Peace Process (EU, UN, USA and Russia) adopted a declaration on 30 March welcoming President Abbas' call for the new Palestinian government to commit to a “platform of peace”. Also, after “having carefully assessed the programme of the new government approved on March 28”, the Quartet “noted with grave concern that the new government has not committed to the principles spelled out on 30 January” (non-violence, recognition of Israel, acceptance of previous agreements, including the Roadmap - EUROPE 9121). The Quartet recalls that donors will review aid to Palestine “against that government's commitment to the principles outlined above”, and that “there will inevitably be an effect on direct assistance to that government and its ministries”. At the same time, the Quartet encouraged “continued humanitarian assistance to meet the basic needs of the Palestinian people”.
