26/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - MEPs Marie Anne Isler Beguin (French Green) and Pierre Jonckheer (Belgian Green) comment in a press release that on 29 November, the European Commission will try to get EU Member States to agree to the free circulation of GMOs in the EU, and the Commission's new attempt may well not be supported by a qualified majority in the Member States (see yesterday's Europe, p.13). The MEPs explain that the Commission has lodged five proposals to force Austria, Luxembourg, Germany, France and Greece to lift their legislation banning the marketing of gentically modified corn Bt176 and T25, genetically modified canola Topas 19/2 and MS1XRF1 canola. These five countries banned the GMOs in question under safety clauses (from either the old 1990 directive or the new 2001 directive).
