THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/commission/president

26/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Thursday issue of the German daily Stern publishes the criticisms of the MEPs against Romano Prodi, after the declarations by the latter over the possibility that EU enlargement takes place even without the ratification of the Treaty of Nice (see EUROPE of 23 June, p.4 and yesterday, p.7). The Commission President is completely unsuited to his job, asserts, according to Stern, the German Social Democrat Dagmar Roth-Behrend, for whom the possibility of Mr Prodi's resignation should be raised. The daily also cites the Austria Social Democrat Hannes Swoboda (until now in favour of Mr Prodi, notes Stern), who recognises that the issue of a resignation by Mr Prodi is regularly posed, but that a change at the head of the Commission would be only possible if there was, at present, an alternative, which is not the case. The European Commission must clearly tell their President that things cannot go on like this, feels Mr Swoboda.
